Mike Berwick

Name: Mike Berwick
Age:   47
Occupation:  Genealogist/Physicist/Lecturer
I’ve been volunteering at Wildlife Aid since: April 2007
I first heard about Wildlife Aid via: Watching "Wildlife SOS" from its launch on Easter Sunday 1996!
Have now had several cameo appearances, but still eagerly await each new series.
My reason for joining Wildlife Aid as a volunteer is: because I'd missed being as close to nature as I was in my youth and wanted a 'second chance' to actively help wildlife.
I do 1 regular shift per week of about 6 hours plus as many additional hours as required for additional duties.
My volunteer duties include: Trainee Hospital Auxiliary/ICU Team Leader, Educational Speaker, Newsletter/Facebook/Website Author/Administrator.
The best thing about volunteering at Wildlife Aid is: knowing you are part of such a wonderful team that saves so many lives...at least every 30 minutes during orphan season!
My favourite animal or bird is: ALL OF THEM, but especially badgers!
Chronic sufferer from WAWA (Wildife Aid Webcam Addiction).
My most memorable moment at Wildlife Aid was: when a beautiful roe doe 'died' on the treatment table as three of us struggled to save her. Emotions rose, but we stayed calm and wouldn't give up. A faint pulse returned... then she took another breath...and it felt like we'd all won the lottery.
The one patient of the centre I will never forget is: Tilly, the orphaned badger cub. Not the first I'd seen or even the first I helped to release, but she was the first that I had the huge privilege of bottle feeding.
Volunteering at Wildlife Aid has enhanced my life in the following ways: I really look forward to monday mornings as I've gained so many amazing friends both at the hospital & all around the world.
My interest/hobbies outside Wildlife Aid include:  wildlife photography and Englefield Green Cricket Club.
