Up close and personal with lice!
Not exactly a "patient"... This ugly little fellow is one of a multitude of lice found on deer we get into the hospital.
Using our wonderful new microscope bought with very generous donations from the "Badger set band" and a weekend volunteer at Wildlife Aid. Big thanks to both of you.
Microscopes are vital in veterinary medicine, for many reasons, one being that we can examine the faeces and skin of unwell animals to look for signs of internal or external parasites and then to identify those parasites to enable the correct treatment to be used. Knowing what you are dealing with before starting treatment is half the battle won already!
Deer lice do not live on humans, though many of us unwittingly provide a temporary home for them on our clothes and skin - definately not one of the perks of the job!
