We are super-proud, and slightly overwhelmed, to be releasing a single, a cover of ‘The One and Only, in support of British wildlife, and of our founder and CEO, Simon Cowell MBE.

A supergroup of pop legends from the eighties and nineties have recorded a cover of the classic hit The One and Only to help raise awareness and vital funds for Simon’s Last Wish, after Simon was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

The group, aptly named ‘Wildlife Aid’, includes Tony Hadley, former lead singer of Spandau Ballet, Carol Decker from T-Pau, Paul Young, Tunde from Lighthouse Family, Roachford and members of boybands 911 and A1.

Other artists on the recording include Doris Pearson from Five Star, Clark Datchler from Johnny Hates Jazz, Simon Climie from Climie Fisher, Pauline Henry from The Chimes, Kenny Thomas and Kule T from MN8. Songwriter and pop star Nik Kershaw, who wrote the hit, gave permission for the song to be used and its original performer, Chesney Hawkes, is also supporting the project. All artists and producers donated their time for free.

Lou Cowell: “If we build it, Dad lives forever.”

The mega-musical collaboration was all organised by Simon’s daughter, Lou Cowell (Deputy CEO), who was previously a professional recording artist. Lou began talking to some of her old music industry contacts and the project snowballed. The big names were more than happy to help.

Lou said: “After Dad’s diagnosis we were all understandably floored. We’ve remained positive and I started to formulate the idea of the single after a call with one of my old friends from the recording industry. The response has been incredible. The new centre will be Dad’s legacy and allow the charity to carry on his work long into the future. From my perspective, if we build it, Dad lives forever.”

Simon said: “I’m humbled that so many people have created this incredible recording and it shows that people really do care about wildlife, because ultimately it will be wild animals that benefit from the song. Our natural world is not in a good way at present. The Wildlife Aid Foundation has been rescuing and rehabilitating British wildlife and releasing it back into the wild for over 40 years. With the help of this single we can carry on that work.”

Simon’s Last Wish

At the end of June 2022, after a routine clinical scan, Simon was diagnosed with an aggressive form of lung cancer that is terminal.

Having turned his back on a lucrative City career 40 years ago, Simon founded the Wildlife Aid Foundation, which has become one of the UK’s best-loved and busiest wildlife rescue charities. His sacrifice, passion for conservation, and antics on ‘Wildlife SOS’ secured him a place in the nation’s heart and an MBE for services to wildlife.

He has devoted his life to saving wild animals that couldn’t help themselves. Hundreds of thousands have been given a second chance thanks to his compassion and dedication. Tragically, for him there will be no second chances.

Now, as his last wish, he is asking for YOUR help to continue his legacy and protect the lives of generations of wildlife to come.
