Rescue

During the 2022 summer heatwave, we were called out to rescue a magpie that had become 'stuck in the mud', at the bottom of a local pond that had dried up.

After getting a little stuck himself, and almost losing his welly boot, Lawrie managed to hook the net over the bird and pull him back to safety.

Rehabilitation

With the magpie covered in thick (and very smelly) mud, the vet team got to work and soon had him cleaned off and looking as good as new!

Release

As the rescue and cleaning process was rather stressful, the bird was kept in one of our enclosures overnight to relax and recover from the ordeal.

The very next day, Lawrie was extremely happy to take the lucky magpie back to where he was found, releasing him in a nearby field, where he could gather himself before flying off!
