Appeal for Dog Food
Wednesday, 25 August 2010

Young jackdawsUnbelievable as it seems, we are running out of dog food!  We had a tremendous response to our spring food appeal, but we are using about 80 cans of food every day and so supplies are diminishing very quickly

At the centre we have many different birds and animals for whom meat forms the basis of their diet: hedgehogs, foxes, badgers, and also corvids (magpies, crows etc) and many of our smaller garden birds are fed it as part of a ‘fledgling mix’.  At this time of year the hospital is still full; we have 13 badger cubs growing up ready for release in the autumn, and although this year’s fox cubs have now ‘left home’, we have many adult foxes who are poorly, and of course the many, many hedgehogs who are still making a valiant effort to put on weight before the colder weather is upon us!!

We have noticed that some brands tend to be much better for the animals’ health than others, so if you are able to help at all, we would be very grateful if you could choose from the following items.  Many are on special offer at the supermarkets at the moment, and don’t forget if you can’t deliver them to us you can order online, and the major supermarkets will deliver on your behalf.

Pedigree Dog Food – Meat & Poultry Chunks in Gravy

Sainsburys – Two for £5.00

Tesco – Two for £6.00

Ocado – Three packs for £7.50

Pedigree Puppy Food – Mixed packs

Sainsburys – Two for £5.00

Tesco – Two for £6.00

Ocado – Three packs for £7.50

Weebox Chub Roll

50 per pack at both Sainsburys and Tescos

Thank you so much for your ongoing support of Wildlife Aid, and thank you in advance for helping us with this appeal!

A dangerous time of year for wildlife
Thursday, 06 May 2010

Wildlife Aid sees far too many examples of the harm that man can do to wild animals, and a couple of recent incidents involving fox cubs have brought the point home to us yet again.

At this time of year, there are many young animals about in our gardens and open areas, who can get into trouble easily because of human debris i.e. bottle, cans, bags etc.  Fox cubs and squirrels have had their young already this year, hedgehogs will soon be being born, and deer will be producing their fawns during May and June.  Mothers choose safe places to have their young, and this may be in your garden; perhaps under your shed or in your compost heap!!  Please be careful when tidying your garden, and if you do come across young animals or birds, please do not touch them!  Call Wildlife Aid for advice on how to best deal with the situation.

Just have a look at the following pictures to see how man's carelessness can potentially be fatal to young fox cubs.

What's wrong with my fox?
Thursday, 19 February 2009

FoxMany people are noticing foxes in and around their gardens, and we often receive calls from members of the public regarding the foxes seeming ill-health.  Hopefully we can answer some of the most frequently asked questions here, and can provide a solution to the most common ailment in foxes - sarcoptic mange.

Hedgehog Release Programme
Wednesday, 09 August 2006

hedgehog orphanEach year Wildlife Aid takes in many young hedgehogs, who are raised to adulthood here at the centre, as well as taking in sick and injured adult hogs all year round.  Once fully grown, fit and healthy, these hedgehogs need to be released back into the wild, and we run a Hedgehog Release Programme for Wildlife Aid members who would like to assist us.

It should be stressed that these animals are not being rehomed as pets; the hedgehog may choose to take itself off as soon as it arrives, preferring the flavour of the slugs down the road as opposed to yours!  However, by joining the release programme you are playing a vital role in our work: to get every healthy wild animal back into the wild as soon as possible.
